William Ray Brownlee--born 8/15/1884 in Sylvia, Kansas; Died 6/23/1972 in
New Iberia, LA; married Goldie May Childs on December 27, 1911. Parents
were James Erskine Brownlee and Anna Flora Matthews.
Ray completed two years at Sterling College but did not graduate. He was
teaching school when he met Goldie, but later had to go into farming
full-time to support his family. He continued his interest in education,
serving many years on the local school board, as well as on various township
committees.
He was known for his honesty and fair play and never allowed
any personal prejudice to come into play when allotting work on roads, etc.
May Brownlee Shaw says "that is probably the reason he was sought out for
such plums! As county assesssor or township commissioner. The years of the
Depression and dust storms were harsh ones for him since he had always
taught us to assume that we would go to college. It was his great regret
that he could not give use more assistance. It was needless worry--we made
it through anyway!"
