Goldie May Childs--born April 20, 1883 in North Madison, Indiana; died June
5th, 1952 in Pretty Prairie, Ks. Her parents were Sarah Ann Burnett and
Robert Caples Childs.
Goldie was teaching school when she got married. Although married women
were not allowed to teach school, the school district allowed her to finish
out the school year. She enjoyed singing with her sisters, reading,
gardening, playing piano, and sewing. As a young woman, she played tennis
and she belonged to the local farm bureau (which taught such things as
canning by pressure cooker, hat making and other domestic arts), the
proverbial Ladies Aid and all such organizations.
According to May Brownlee
Shaw, "When the Depression hit, all frivolous activities blew away with the
dust. My mother had a splendid sense of humor which was a saving
characteristic during the hard times of the '30's."
